Senior Privacy Engineer

We're looking for a Senior Privacy Engineer to join us in protecting Discord's users. What You'll Be Doing: - Build and operate the systems that enable data rights for our users across the data lifecycle, including collection, access, and deletion. - Own end to end software development of new tools and scalable solutions to optimize the work of the Discord Privacy Program and enable teams to use user data effectively and responsibly in a complex cloud environment. - Partner with cross-functional teams, including Engineering, Product, Data, and Legal to conduct risk assessments, code reviews, and ensure compliance with Discord’s Privacy Principles and regulatory requirements. - Advocate for privacy-preserving solutions, act as a privacy subject matter expert across teams, and identify new opportunities to promote our privacy posture. - Lead Privacy incident response efforts, including mitigating situations that may pose a risk to our Privacy Principles and providing assistance in incident response efforts outside of the privacy domain. What you should have: - A passion for user privacy and data protection. - 3+ years of work experience in Privacy or Security engineering or building production systems that meet legal requirements. - 3+ years of experience in at least one general purpose programming language (e.g. Python, Rust, Typescript). - 3+ years of experience working in cloud-based environments (we use Google Cloud). - Experience with concepts and practices such as threat modeling, data lifecycle management, and data classification - Familiarity with privacy concerns that apply in an industry setting, including consent, deletion, and retention, and a basic understanding of regulations such as GDPR or CCPA. - Experience with conducting reviews of system architecture and product feature specs and driving mitigations of data protection risk, deviations from privacy policies, and privacy dark patterns Bonus Points: - Experience developing, operating, and debugging distributed systems. - Experience with modern data platform infrastructure - Experience integrating internal systems with privacy and risk management platforms Candidates must reside in or be willing to relocate to the San Francisco Bay Area (Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Solano, and Sonoma counties). Relocation assistance may be available. The US base salary range for this full-time position is $196,000 to $220,500 + equity + benefits. Our salary ranges are determined by role and level. Within the range, individual pay is determined by additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Rust/C++ Senior Software Engineer

Discord is looking for a Senior Software Engineer to build high-performance, cross-platform client software that powers experiences for 200+ million users worldwide. You'll work on core libraries that run across Windows, Mac, Linux, Android, and iOS—writing native code using platform-specific APIs to provide optimal experiences wherever people use Discord. As a Senior Software Engineer on our A/V Client team, you'll tackle challenging performance problems, design systems that scale across diverse hardware configurations, and build the foundation that enables real-time experiences for millions of concurrent users. What you'll be doing: - Build core libraries that power Discord's client experiences across desktop, browser, and mobile platforms (Rust, C++, and Typescript) - Optimize performance end-to-end across all supported platforms - Design and run experiments with proper success criteria and statistical rigor to validate improvements - Debug complex issues across diverse hardware and platform configurations - Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ship features that delight millions of users What you should have: - 4+ years building large-scale, cross-platform software (Windows, macOS, Android, iOS, or game console development) - Strong Rust or C++ skills with deep understanding of memory management, multi-threading, and low-level optimization - Experience building performance-critical applications where milliseconds matter Bonus points: - Experience designing experiments that prove (not just suggest) improvements - Experience with real-time media applications (audio/video, game streaming, etc.) - Hands-on experience with WebRTC, SDP, SRTP, or DTLS protocols - Familiarity with audio/video codecs (Opus, H.264, AV1, etc.) and their corresponding quality measurements (POLQA, PSNR, VMAF, etc.) - Proficiency with CPU, GPU, and memory profiling—you can identify bottlenecks, optimize critical paths, and manage resource constraints effectively - You have built or contributed to open source projects Candidates must reside in or be willing to relocate to the San Francisco Bay Area (Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Solano, and Sonoma counties). Privacy Engineer

What you will do: - Ensure user privacy is upheld across all aspects of Discord, from data collection and processing through to deletion. - Develop technical tools and solutions that advance privacy at Discord, like enhancing privacy review processes through code and dataflow analysis and enforcing data minimization. - Partner with cross-functional teams, including Engineering, Product, Data, and Legal, to conduct risk assessments, code and design reviews, and ensure compliance with Discord’s Privacy Principles and regulatory requirements. - Analyze privacy incidents for root causes and work with security and platform teams to ensure we are monitoring for new privacy risks. What you have: - A passion for user privacy and data protection. - 1+ years experience protecting user data and user privacy through tools or processes, such as code review, data mapping, and static analysis. Principal Software Engineer - Infrastructure

As a Principal Engineer in this organization, you'll operate across our infrastructure teams to shape our technical vision and keep Discord running reliably at massive scale. This is a role for someone who thrives at the intersection of deep technical expertise and organizational leadership. You'll contribute to the long-term infrastructure roadmap, tackle our most complex and ambiguous technical challenges, and ensure Discord's systems remain reliable, efficient, and ready for the next 200M users. You will: - Lead Discord's most critical infrastructure initiatives. - Define and drive the technical vision and multi-year roadmap for Infrastructure, aligning teams around shared architectural principles. - Partner with leadership across the company to ensure infrastructure capabilities enable product innovation. - Design systems that balance reliability, cost-efficiency, and scalability. - Mentor and grow senior engineers across multiple teams, raising the technical bar organization-wide. - Represent Discord's engineering culture externally through blog posts, conference talks, and open source contributions. You have: - 10+ years of experience building and operating large-scale distributed systems. - Experience architecting complex infrastructure serving hundreds of millions of users with strict uptime requirements. - Deep expertise in backend systems, databases, and the operational realities of running systems at scale. - Ability to navigate significant ambiguity and make sound technical decisions that hold up over time. - Experience influencing technical direction across many teams without direct authority. - Strong communication skills and you can articulate complex technical concepts to any audience and build alignment around your vision. - A passion for mentorship and raising the capabilities of engineers around you. Bonus points: - Experience with Rust, Elixir, or Python in production systems. - Expertise with distributed databases like ScyllaDB, Cassandra, or similar. - Expertise building large scale chat products. - History of open source contributions.
