The Role: We are looking for a Staff Cryptography Engineer to join our team building post-quantum cryptography (PQC) hardware acceleration for HSM and network-appliance products. You will implement the software side of modern post-quantum algorithms: reference models, optimised implementations, and the test infrastructure that proves they are correct. This is a hands-on development role at the heart of applied cryptography, working with some of the most experienced cryptographic engineers in the field. Responsibilities : You will implement and maintain reference and bit-accurate models of ML-KEM, ML-DSA and SLH-DSA/LMS in C/C++/Rust and Python, develop constant-time software implementations of cryptographic functions, and build out the known-answer-test and test-vector tooling (NIST ACVP) used for verification and CAVP certification. You will contribute to the decomposition of algorithms into hardware-friendly building blocks (Keccak, NTT and polynomial arithmetic, samplers, encode/decode), support RTL and firmware engineers with algorithm questions and debugging, and help evaluate third-party cryptographic libraries, working under the guidance of our senior cryptography engineers. - Implement reference models, optimised software and test-vector infrastructure for ML-KEM, ML-DSA and SLH-DSA/LMS - Support hardware and firmware teams with algorithm expertise, debugging and certification-oriented tooling Requirements: We are looking for a candidate with a Master’s degree (PhD a plus) in Cryptography, Mathematics, Computer Science or a related field and at least five years of experience implementing cryptographic algorithms or security-critical software in C/C++ or Rust. You have solid understanding of modern cryptographic primitives and ideally first exposure to post-quantum schemes (lattice-based or hash-based) and their underlying mathematics. You care about correctness and write well-tested, readable code; you understand what constant-time implementation means and why it matters. Familiarity with NIST test-vector formats, CAVP/ACVP or certification-oriented development is a plus. Our immediate objective is to develop functional quantum computers within the NISQ regime, aiming to construct fault-tolerant machines that require minimal QEC overhead. Our recent breakthroughs include achieving 99.97% fidelity in two-qubit gates and 99.9992% fidelity in single-qubit operations without error correction, setting new industry standards for performance. We are looking for Quantum Scientist to join our UK Science team at IonQ. Our Quantum Scientists work at the forefront of our research efforts to develop the next generation of quantum computers. They are responsible for validating and optimising the performance of our computers, playing a critical role in ensuring we are able to meet our research and development goals and timelines. Our Scientists’ work spans a broad range of areas from designing, coding, debugging and executing experiments, to developing and validating novel control schemes. They are responsible for documenting and sharing their findings with the aim of pushing the boundaries of system performance. Responsibilities: As a Quantum Scientist, you will typically be responsible for a combination of these different responsibilities: - Prototyping and characterising coherent control and cooling schemes for trapped-ion qubits using laser and microwave fields. - Calibrating and benchmarking quantum systems, focusing on achieving the highest fidelities for quantum circuit primitives (e.g. ion transport or gate operations) and full circuits. - Validating emerging trap technologies, including integrated electronics and photonics for large-scale architectures. - Analysing experimental data, debug complex hardware/software interactions, and ensure reliability of qubit operations. Requirements: To be successful in this role, you will need a PhD in physics or a related discipline, with a strong foundation in atomic or qubit-related physics. Prior postdoctoral or industry experience is valuable, but we are open to applicants moving directly from a PhD. We’re looking for someone with a solid background in quantum control, and hands-on experience in calibration, benchmarking, or coherent control of qubits, would be desirable. We're looking for an enthusiastic and highly technical Senior Software Engineer for our non-realtime controllers team who will thrive in our dynamic cross-disciplinary environment. You will be working closely with our skilled software engineers, our systems teams who operate the physical quantum computers, and our world-leading quantum scientists to build and operate the software that controls the hardware surrounding our quantum computers. Previous exposure to quantum systems is not required. You will own areas of the hardware control surface end to end, from the device protocol up to a service running reliably across our fleet. This is a hands-on engineering role and stays that way as you grow. A working quantum computer is far more than the ion trap and its real-time control electronics. It depends on a fleet of supporting hardware, including cryogenic compressors, vacuum pumps, power supplies, lasers, temperature controllers, wavemeters and cameras, that has to be kept observable, controllable and reliable. The timing-critical operations such as gate waveforms and ion transport run on dedicated real-time FPGA systems, while this team owns everything that does not need hard timing guarantees. These services run on general-purpose Linux hardware and must be rock-solid, because a failed compressor or an un-noticed pressure drift takes a whole machine offline. Responsibilities : This is a hands-on engineering role, balancing delivery of your own areas with support for the teams and scientists who depend on them. Key responsibilities include: - Own a group of device controllers end to end, covering API design, implementation, rollout and ongoing operational health. - Make services robust against the ways real instruments fail. - Bring devices onto our current framework, and roll the result out across the fleet without disrupting running experiments. - Improve the shared framework where a problem turns out to be common to many controllers rather than specific to one. - Work closely with the systems teams and scientists who depend on these services, and strengthen observability, health checking and alerting. - Raise the standard of the code around you through review, and bring less experienced engineers on by working alongside them. Requirements: To be successful, you will need experience working with Linux based systems and interfacing with hardware, and a track record of making software behave well against unreliable external dependencies. In this role you will work with physicists to develop ion trap control software, guiding the trajectories of hundreds to thousands of ions in parallel using electromagnetic fields. This will directly contribute to the team's mission of scaling the computational capacity of our trapped-ion quantum computers. This role will play a central role in shaping the control software that supports our work in building the world's most advanced quantum systems. Responsibilities: In this position, you will develop our framework for describing ion transport constraints and, in combination with an electromagnetic model of the ion trap, synthesise voltage waveform data to drive hundreds to thousands of independent DAC channels, with runtime parametrisation to enable closed-loop calibration and mid-circuit feedforward. You will have the opportunity to accelerate the design and analysis of transport waveforms for trapped-ion quantum computers, and to develop the high-performance data pipelines required to control ion traps of this size and complexity, contributing directly to our roadmap for utility-scale quantum computing. Key responsibilities include: - Building the framework that transforms high-level ion transport specifications into voltage waveform data and readies it for runtime execution. - Supporting the transport waveform team in developing new solvers and physics simulations as components in this framework. - Collaborating with experimental and theoretical scientists to understand their requirements for experiment and simulation. - Contributing to the design of transport operations used for quantum circuits, and how they are parametrised and calibrated. - Interfacing with runtime, non-real-time control, FPGA and electronics teams to shape the overall system architecture.
