Mozilla Corporation is the non-profit-backed technology company that has shaped the internet for the better over the last 25 years. We make pioneering brands like Firefox, the privacy-minded web browser. Now, with more than 225 million people around the world using our products each month, we’re shaping the next 25 years of technology and helping to reclaim an internet built for people, not companies. Our work focuses on diverse areas including AI, social media, security and more. And we’re doing this while never losing our focus on our core mission – to make the internet better for people. The Mozilla Corporation is wholly owned by the non-profit 501(c) Mozilla Foundation. This means we aren’t beholden to any shareholders — only to our mission. Along with thousands of volunteer contributors and collaborators all over the world, Mozillians design, build and distribute open-source software that enables people to enjoy the internet on their terms. About this team and role: As a Senior Software Engineer on the Ecosystem Services Team, you’ll build and own back-end systems and the integrations that keep our services running, help maintain and evolve the cloud infrastructure the application runs on, and play an active role in keeping the service reliable and healthy in production. You'll do this while collaborating closely with frontend engineers, product managers, CloudEng, and UX and design partners to deliver reliable features. We are looking for engineers who treat the systems they build as their own: people who are comfortable owning a service end to end, from writing the code to verifying it works as intended in production and monitoring its health. We are hiring for multiple Ecosystem Services Team back-end teams - each solving their own unique challenges to make the web better for everyone. More details about all hiring teams will be shared in the interviews. About Ecosystem Services Ecosystem Services builds and operates the back-end platforms that power Mozilla products and services, with a focus on privacy, security, and delivering critical functionality to Firefox and millions of users worldwide. Our portfolio spans a diverse set of platforms and services. Representative examples include Privacy Services, which provides the APIs and infrastructure behind Mozilla VPN, Relay (email and phone aliasing), and Monitor (data breach detection and remediation); AutoPush, Mozilla's Web Push platform for securely delivering notifications and real-time updates to Firefox clients; and Remote Settings, Mozilla's platform for delivering configuration updates to Firefox outside the regular release cycle. Together with many other backend platforms across the organization, these services help deliver secure, reliable experiences to Mozilla users every day. Our teams own services end-to-end from designing and building distributed systems, to operating them in production, improving reliability, and evolving the cloud infrastructure they run on. We work closely with product, frontend engineering, Cloud Engineering, UX, and design partners to build resilient systems that make the web better for everyone. We're hiring backend engineers across multiple Ecosystem Services teams, each tackling different technical challenges while sharing a culture of ownership, collaboration, and operational excellence. More details about the specific teams and domains will be shared during the interview process. What you’ll do: - Lead backend development, building and maintaining server-side logic - Take real ownership of the services you work on: deploy them, operate them, and keep them healthy in production rather than handing them off - Work closely with our CloudEng Team to maintain and improve production environments, including monitoring and alerting with tools such as OpenTelemetry, Sentry, Prometheus, and Grafana - Participate in an on-call / off-hours support rotation, triaging and resolving production issues, partnering with CloudEng and support teams to investigate incidents, address bug reports, and keep the application running reliably - Periodically rotate into a support role, handling releases, dependency updates, and incoming work requests from customer support and other stakeholders - Thoughtfully apply AI-assisted development tools to move faster and raise quality, while maintaining good judgment about where they fit and where they don't - Partner with and support stakeholders (e.g. front-end, platform), ensuring backend systems, APIs, and data contracts meet their needs - Partner with frontend and cross-functional teams to align on project goals, contribute to API design, and ensure backend systems, APIs, and data contracts meet their needs - Participate in code reviews to maintain high standards of code quality and system reliability - Participate in security and privacy reviews, ensuring all data protection measures meet compliance standards What you’ll bring: - 4+ years of experience in software development with a strong focus on backend technologies - Strong professional experience with Python , TypeScript/Node.js, or Rust building back-end services and confidence leading back-end engineering projects. - Proficiency with PostgreSQL and SQL query optimization, including relational schema design and migrations with a query builder such as Knex - Hands-on DevOps experience on Google Cloud Platform (GCP), with Docker-based build and deploy pipelines. You are comfortable deploying, operating, and troubleshooting services in the cloud rather than handing that responsibility to someone else - Hands-on experience with observability and monitoring tooling such as Sentry and Grafana - A pragmatic commitment to shipping quality work. You care about the quality and reliability of what you ship, you make sensible trade-offs under real constraints, and you consistently move work to and into production. - Strong engineering judgment. You can navigate ambiguity, weigh trade-offs, and make sound decisions with incomplete information, and you know when to ask for input - A genuine ownership mindset. You are excited to own a service end to end and have a track record of operating what you build in production, including experience with on-call or off-hours production support - Experience mentoring junior engineers and driving technical excellence in code quality, testing, and process improvements Bonus Points for experience with: - Performance / load testing - Experience with IaC tools such as Terraform and Kubernetes - Open-source contributions or personal engineering projects - Django experience What you’ll get: - Generous performance-based bonus plans to all eligible employees - we share in our success as one team - Rich medical, dental, and vision coverage - Generous retirement contributions with 100% immediate vesting (regardless of whether you contribute) - Quarterly all-company wellness days where everyone takes a pause together - Country specific holidays plus a day off for your birthday - One-time home office stipend - Annual professional development budget - Quarterly well-being stipend - Considerable paid parental leave - Employee referral bonus program - Other benefits (life/AD&D, disability, EAP, etc. - varies by country) About Mozilla Mozilla exists to build the Internet as a public resource accessible to all because we believe that open and free is better than closed and controlled. At MZLA, the team behind Thunderbird, we build privacy-respecting communication and productivity tools that help people manage their digital lives while staying in control of their data. We are open source by design. Our products are developed transparently and in collaboration with a global community of contributors, and that same spirit shapes how we work: collaboratively, inclusively, and with a shared commitment to putting users first. We are a small but growing company of 60+ people distributed across seven countries. As Thunderbird evolves beyond a single desktop application, we are expanding across desktop, mobile, paid services, and new product experiences that help people and organizations work more effectively without giving up control to big tech ecosystems. Our revenue model combines user donations, which help keep Thunderbird’s apps freely available, with paid services that cover the costs of hosted offerings while supporting long-term sustainability and continued innovation. A note about MZLA and Mozilla: MZLA Technologies Corporation is the nonprofit-owned company behind Thunderbird and part of the Mozilla family. MZLA is separate from Mozilla Corporation and has its own compensation programs, benefits, and employment policies. To learn more, visit www.thunderbird.net and www.thunderbolt.io The opportunity MZLA is entering a new phase of growth as we bring Thunderbird, Thunderbolt, and other current and future products and services into the enterprise market. Our enterprise approach will be partner-led, with external partners leading sales, implementation, and ongoing customer relationships while MZLA provides the products, technical expertise, and subject-matter knowledge needed for success. Our move into the enterprise market is being shaped in part by growing interest in digital sovereignty, particularly in Europe , where enterprises and public-sector organizations are placing greater emphasis on control over data and infrastructure, deployment flexibility, privacy, security, interoperability, and reduced vendor dependence. We are looking for a Senior Lead, Enterprise Partnerships & Strategy to add dedicated partnership and commercial expertise to work already underway . You will partner closely with the CEO, senior leadership, and cross-functional teams to shape MZLA’s enterprise strategy, evaluate opportunities, develop partnership and commercial models, shape pricing and packaging, and advance a cohesive enterprise offering across our products and services. This is a hands-on role in a lean environment. Success will require someone who can operate credibly with senior leaders and external partners while remaining closely involved in the analysis, preparation, coordination, negotiation, and follow-through needed to move opportunities forward and build a more repeatable enterprise approach. This role requires regular working-hour overlap with colleagues in North American time zones, as well as flexibility to meet with partners and stakeholders across Europe. This role will also include periodic travel, including international, to meet with partners, prospective customers and represent MZLA at relevant industry events. What you’ll do - Help define and execute an enterprise strategy across MZLA’s products and services. - Translate digital sovereignty priorities into clear enterprise and partnership requirements. - Identify, evaluate, and advance enterprise opportunities and strategic partnerships, particularly in Europe and other sovereignty-focused markets. - Work with stakeholders to clarify roles across MZLA, external partners, and other Mozilla entities. - Develop pricing, packaging, licensing, reseller, revenue-sharing, support, implementation, and other commercial models. - Lead or support partner negotiations and senior-level commercial discussions. - Work closely with product and engineering teams to understand capabilities, deployment options, integrations, security and privacy considerations, support requirements, and roadmap dependencies. - Translate technical capabilities into clear enterprise propositions and partner plans. - Build practical processes and decision frameworks that support repeatable execution and help ensure external commitments remain realistic and supportable. What you bring - 15+ years of relevant professional experience, including substantial experience in product or strategic partnerships, enterprise strategy, commercial strategy, or technical business development. - Experience building a new partnership, enterprise, platform, or commercial capability in a partner-led environment. - Experience working with European enterprises, public-sector organizations, regulated institutions, technology partners, or similarly complex stakeholders. - Strong understanding of digital sovereignty and the commercial, technical, regulatory, legal, and procurement considerations shaping technology decisions in Europe. - Experience working through resellers, systems integrators, implementation partners, or similar partner-led enterprise models. - Demonstrated experience developing and negotiating pricing, packaging, licensing, reseller, revenue-sharing, implementation, support, or similar commercial models, with strong judgment around enterprise buying processes, deal economics, negotiation strategy, and complex procurement. - Experience with technically complex software products, platforms, infrastructure, AI-enabled systems, communications technology, security, or privacy technology, with the technical and product fluency to work credibly with engineering, product, partner, and enterprise stakeholders. - Strong executive communication, relationship-management, facilitation, and negotiation skills. - Ability to bring structure to ambiguous opportunities and move comfortably between strategy and detailed execution. - A collaborative, low-ego working style and the ability to influence without formal authority. - Strong alignment with Mozilla’s mission and values, including openness, privacy, user agency, trust, and long-term sustainability. - Ability and willingness to travel periodically, including internationally. Bonus points for - Experience with on-premises, self-hosted, private-cloud, in-region, or other customer-controlled deployment models. - Experience with open-source software, open standards, or open technology ecosystems. - Familiarity with AI-enabled software, enterprise search, knowledge systems, communications platforms, productivity tools, or privacy-oriented technology. - Experience building partnerships or enterprise initiatives in an early-stage company, new business unit, or newly established function. - Experience coordinating partnerships across affiliated organizations or a portfolio of related products. About you You are a strategic thinker who is equally comfortable working in the details. You know that successful partnerships depend on more than strong relationships: they require sound product judgment, clear commercial models, technical credibility, and disciplined execution. You understand that enterprise technology decisions are shaped not only by features and price, but also by control, jurisdiction, trust, interoperability, and long-term technology dependence. You can translate those considerations into practical enterprise and partnership strategies without overstating what a product or organization can deliver. You are comfortable representing an organization in senior external conversations while remaining hands-on with pricing, preparation, technical dependencies, coordination, and follow-through. You are motivated by building a durable enterprise capability in a lean environment rather than inheriting a mature program or immediately building a large team. Work environment This is a full-time, fully remote position. The opportunity Thunderbolt is an open-source, cross-platform AI product initiative from the team behind Thunderbird. It is being built around a clear principle: people and organizations should be able to use AI while staying in control of their data, infrastructure, model choices, and long-term options. Thunderbolt is designed to support flexible deployment models, integrations with AI tools and workflows, and use cases across desktop, web, and mobile. We are looking for a Senior Engineering Manager to lead engineering execution, people management, and operating practices for Thunderbolt as it moves from R&D incubation into a more mature product and enterprise development phase . This role will help the team define what production-ready means at this stage: stronger release discipline, clearer ownership, higher user-facing product quality, stronger engineering practices, and a more scalable operating model. This is a hands-on technical management role for a seasoned engineering leader who has helped early-stage products become reliable, production-ready, and enterprise-ready. You will manage and grow a small senior engineering team, stay close to code quality and technical execution , and partner closely with product and technical leadership to turn an open-source, privacy-respecting AI product into something organizations can deploy with confidence. We are looking for someone who has seen this stage before: a promising early product, a small senior team, real enterprise interest, incomplete process, and the need to move quickly without creating fragile systems or one-off customer work. What you’ll do - Lead engineering execution by clarifying priorities, ownership, timelines, risks, dependencies, and quality expectations. - Manage engineers and contractors, including coaching, feedback, prioritization, performance support, and team development. - Stay close to the codebase by contributing code, reviewing technical work, evaluating tradeoffs, and helping the team maintain momentum and quality. - Partner with technical and product leadership to turn product direction, AI strategy, user experience goals, and technical priorities into coordinated engineering plans. - Establish planning, review, release, and follow-through practices that improve predictability and reduce bottlenecks. - Maintain high standards for code quality, testing, documentation, reliability, security awareness, maintainability, and release readiness. - Build strong product and architectural context across AI-enabled workflows, integrations, local-first or customer-controlled architectures, and release requirements. - Partner across product, design, enterprise-facing teams, and technical leadership to balance speed, user experience, privacy, quality, enterprise readiness, and long-term sustainability. - Lead hiring, onboarding, and resource planning as the Thunderbolt engineering team grows. - Help Thunderbolt scale from an incubation-stage product into a reliable, enterprise-ready open-source AI product. What you bring - 15+ years of professional software development experience, including significant experience in senior engineering leadership or complex product delivery roles. - 5+ years of experience managing technical teams, including senior engineers or senior individual contributors. - A track record of leading a team that shipped polished, top-tier products held to a genuine standard of craft. - Strong ability to translate ambiguous product and technical direction into clear plans, ownership models, and delivery momentum. - Technical fluency with AI-enabled products, including the ability to evaluate tradeoffs across areas such as LLM applications, RAG workflows, agents, enterprise search, automation, on-device AI, or AI evaluation. - Demonstrated experience delivering complex applications across multiple platforms, such as desktop, web, and mobile, using technologies such as Tauri, Electron, React Native, or comparable frameworks. - Experience with enterprise software, regulated environments, or similarly complex technical products, including security, privacy, compliance readiness, administration, integrations, and customer-controlled deployment models. - Practical experience with local-first, offline-capable, self-hosted, hybrid, on-premise, air-gapped, or other customer-controlled product architectures, including tradeoffs related to data storage, sync, privacy, reliability, and user experience. - Experience improving engineering practices related to technical planning, code review, release readiness, testing, documentation, CI/CD, maintainability, or technical debt management. - Excellent communication skills around technical prioritization, release risk, ownership, quality expectations, and tradeoffs. Bonus points for - Experience working in open-source or maintainer-style engineering environments. - Experience with compliance or security standards such as SOC 2, HIPAA, ISO 27001, or similar frameworks. - Experience helping take a product from zero to one in a startup or new product initiative. What success looks like Success in this role means helping Thunderbolt make the leap from promising R&D-stage product to a production-ready, enterprise-grade open-source AI product that security-conscious organizations can deploy with confidence . Within the first year, the Senior Engineering Manager should help turn a fast-moving early product into a team and engineering system that can scale by helping the team: - Define what “production-ready” means for Thunderbolt and consistently meet that bar. - Create the clarity, ownership, and release confidence the team needs to ship quickly and sustainably. - Raise the quality of the user-facing product experience while protecting codebase health, maintainability, privacy, and security. - Build the lightweight structure needed for a senior team to do its best work without slowing down experimentation. - Help build Thunderbolt for global scale, enterprise adoption, and real-world impact! Why Thunderbird? Thunderbird is one of the world’s most trusted open-source email applications, empowering more than 20 million people globally. The IT team supports ERP Services, Workplace services, Service-Desk and On-Prem DC Services across the organization aligned with the mission to build a safe & secure internet. As a Software (Application) Engineer in the newly formed Workplace technology team, you’ll help design, build, and maintain the systems and automations that power Mozilla’s workplace technologies — from collaboration and AI productivity tools to identity and access workflows. You’ll manage day-to-day administration, develop scripts and integrations, and contribute to projects that improve reliability, security, and user experience. This role is hands-on and growth-oriented, offering opportunities to deepen your technical expertise while shaping how Mozillians work and collaborate. Note : You don’t need to meet every listed qualification to be considered — we value diverse experiences and learning potential. What you’ll do: - Design, build, and maintain scripts, APIs, and workflow automations that power key workplace systems — collaboration tools (Google Workspace, Slack, Zoom, Atlassian) and identity platforms (Okta). - Develop lightweight services or integrations that connect collaboration, GenAI-tools (OpenAI, Claude, Gemini) and internal systems, enabling agentic flows (e.g., virtual assistants, workflow agents) that reduce manual work and improve user experience. - Implement monitoring, logging and observability for automation and AI workflows; troubleshoot issues and uncover opportunities for reliability, scalability, and cost-efficiency. - Contribute to the evolution of secure onboarding, off-boarding, and mover workflows across access, permissions and SaaS tools — with automation and safe agentic handoffs where appropriate. - Collaborate with IT, Security, and People teams to ensure identity, data, and compliance standards (SSO, DLP, classification) are deeply embedded through automation and script-driven guardrails. - Participate in pilot projects for new AI and productivity capabilities: integrate LLMs & agents, track usage/adoption metrics, build flows that assist users (e.g., knowledge-agent, document summarizer). - Contribute to the code-review process, documentation of shared libraries for workflows/agents, and build a library of integration templates for reuse across the team. - Partner with senior engineers to modernize workplace systems through scalable architecture, API-first design, and intelligent agentic workflows. What you'll bring: - 4–6 years of experience in software engineering, systems integration or workplace technology development, with a focus on automation or scripting. - Proficiency in one or more programming/scripting languages (Java, Go, Python, JavaScript/Apps Script, Bash, PowerShell) and comfortable with RESTful APIs, webhooks, and integration frameworks. - Familiarity with SaaS platforms (Google Workspace, Slack, Zoom, Atlassian) and interest in agentic/AI workflows (LLMs, agents, prompt pipelines). - Understanding of IAM/SSO (Okta, SAML/OIDC/SCIM) or a willingness to grow in this area; experience automating provisioning/access is a plus. - Experience or curiosity about CI/CD, workflow orchestration, and building self-service delivery models that leverage agents or automation. - Strong troubleshooting, documentation and cross-functional communication skills; comfortable collaborating with non-technical partners and translating automation into tangible operational gains. - A growth mindset: you embrace learning new AI technologies, care about user experience, and seek to improve systems through intelligent workflows. - Interest in building agentic flows (for example: bots that triage tickets, summarize documents, assist user tasks) and integrating them responsibly into workplace systems. - Commitment to our values: - Welcoming differences - Being relationship-minded - Practicing responsible participation - Having grit What you’ll get: - Generous performance-based bonus plans to all eligible employees - we share in our success as one team - Rich medical, dental, and vision coverage - Generous retirement contributions with 100% immediate vesting (regardless of whether you contribute) - Quarterly all-company wellness days where everyone takes a pause together - Country specific holidays plus a day off for your birthday - One-time home office stipend - Annual professional development budget - Quarterly well-being stipend - Considerable paid parental leave - Employee referral bonus program - Other benefits (life/AD&D, disability, EAP, etc. - varies by country) About Mozilla Mozilla exists to build the Internet as a public resource accessible to all because we believe that open and free is better than closed and controlled.
